Risks and Benefits of Invisalign Treatment
Everyone wants straight, perfectly aligned teeth. The truth is, virtually no one is born with a flawless smile. If you want to straighten misaligned, crooked, or overlapping teeth without having to wear metal braces, you may be a candidate for the Invisalign system. Benefits of Invisalign
The Invisalign system is a treatment that is designed to correct minor to moderate orthodontic issues. Invisalign works by gradually moving teeth into proper position using a series of clear plastic aligners. The most obvious benefit of Invisalign is that it helps to rapidly straighten teeth in the most inconspicuous manner possible. The clear plastic aligners are virtually undetectable to the naked eye when worn and must be removed for eating and drinking, and can be removed for special occasions.
Aside from the benefit of helping to provide a straighter, more attractive smile, Invisalign has several other important advantages that make it a desirable alternative to traditional orthodontic braces. The Invisalign system uses no brackets, bands, or wires that can trap food. Since the Invisalign aligners can be removed, it makes it much easier for patients to maintain good oral health, reduce plaque buildup, and prevent tooth decay. We have al seen the results of poor oral hygiene on people who have had their braces removed, and have white spots around where they used to be. The Invisalign aligners also help adult patients avoid the embarrassment of wearing traditional braces.
Risks of Invisalign
The Invisalign system is not without its drawbacks. Not everyone is a candidate for Invisalign treatment. The Invisalign aligners are unable to exert enough pressure to correct major orthodontic issues and jaw alignment problems. This means that only individuals with mild to moderate tooth misalignment can benefit from the Invisalign system.
Invisalign treatment also requires a serious commitment from patients. The aligners are meant to be worn 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If the aligners are not worn consistently, patients will not achieve good results.
One of the benefits of Invisalign treatment is that patients can be shown a computerized image of what their teeth will look like after treatment is complete. But the truth is, actual results from Invisalign will vary. There is a risk that some patients will be unhappy with their final results, especially if they failed to wear their aligners consistently. We try and avoid this by having patients who WANT to have straight teeth and are therefore willing to put up with the inconvenience of wearing something, coupled with the convenience of being able to brush and floss easily. And as is true of almost all orthodontic care, whether with conventional or invisible braces, an occlusal adjustment is generally necessary at the conclusion of treatment.
