Periodontal Conditions - Types of Gum Disease

Periodontal treatment plays an integral role in oral health, as it involves the treatment of the supporting structures of the teeth, namely the gums, alveolar bone, and periodontal ligaments. If not properly maintained, the gums and other supporting structures of the teeth can become inflamed, swollen, bleed easily, or start to degrade as a result of bacterial infection. Individuals may suffer from several types of gum disease:

  • Aggressive Periodontitis - Individuals who suffer from aggressive periodontitis often experience rapid deterioration of the teeth's supporting structures, including underlying bone structure. If not treated in a timely manner, this disease can lead to tooth loss.
  • Chronic Periodontitis - The most common type of gum disease, chronic periodontitis typically results from continued lack of oral hygiene. The symptoms of chronic periodontitis include pocket formation or recession of the gingival. If left untreated, deterioration of the supporting gum and tooth structure can develop more rapidly over time.
  • Necrotizing Periodontitis - This condition is often systematic of other health complications, such as malnutrition or autoimmune diseases. This periodontal disease is characterized by lesions and necrosis (premature death of cells) of the gingival (or gums), alveolar bone, and periodontal ligaments.

Periodontal Treatment Options

There are a range of treatment options for gum disease, but at Brick Walk Esthetic Dentistry, we are committed to employing the least invasive method possible for the benefit of our patients. If you have gums that are inflamed, sore, swollen, or bleeding and are seeking periodontal treatment, we can thoroughly evaluate your oral health and determine the best way to satisfy your needs. The treatment method that is right for you will depend on the extent of your gum disease.

  • Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment - Non-surgical treatment is our preferred methodology, and we use it any time a patient's needs can be met without resorting to more extensive treatment. This type of periodontal treatment may involve scaling, root planing, antibiotics, host modulation, or any of the aforementioned treatments in conjunction with one another.
  • Surgical Periodontal Treatment - We can utilize surgical periodontal treatment options to improve the oral health of patients who suffer from severe periodontitis. To ensure our patients' health and to maintain the gums, periodontal ligaments, and alveolar bone structure, we can employ a number of different procedures, including pocket reduction surgery, crown lengthening, soft tissue grafts, and regenerative procedures.
